Feed production is the bed rock of every livestock enterprise. Animals cannot do without feed for a day especially when profit is the sole aim of production. Therefore, the importance of a feed mill in commercial livestock production can never be overemphasized. There are two main types of feed milling machines: the livestock feed production machine and the fish feed production machines. They have some similarities and difference in the mode of operation and components.

Feed takes 60-70% of cost of livestock and fish production. But this cost can be greatly reduced with the presence of a functional feed mill on the farm. With a feed mill, one is able to produce high quality balanced diet for his animals. This will also help to reduce the cost of production as already stated before.

Many of the feeds sold in the market and feed stores are imbalanced and as such do not meet the required nutrient requirements of the animals. The feed ingredients must first pass IUPAC standards and the amount of protein and carbohydrate required for the feed must be properly analyzed before the actual formulation is done. Feed formulation is achieved through parson’s square method, trial and error method and lastly by arithmetic calculations. There is a lot more to it than meets the eye. It is a complex analysis that requires attention to details on every step of the formulation.
